In August, the Overwatch growth crew introduced it was altering McCree’s title. The crew stated in an announcement that “it’s mandatory to vary the title of the hero at present generally known as McCree to one thing that higher represents what Overwatch stands for.” The change, builders stated, would influence the deliberate rollout of an in-game narrative arc that might have centered on McCree.
“Going ahead, in-game characters will now not be named after actual staff and we can be extra considerate and discerning about including actual world references in future Overwatch content material,” builders stated.
That pledge already extends to Overwatch 2, which beforehand featured references to former Overwatch recreation director Jeff Kaplan. Kaplan, who left Blizzard Leisure in April, was referenced on signage in a pizza store on the sequel’s New York Metropolis map, which has since been revised.
