Dr. William Murphy based the Woodie Flowers Award (WFA) in 1996 to acknowledge one mentor yearly whose efficient communication abilities inspire and encourage their college students to know the challenges, alternatives, and satisfaction that engineering and design can present. In 2004 the award was expanded to incorporate one Woodie Flowers Finalist Award (WFFA) recipient at every regional competitors and, in 2009, to every District Championship occasion.
Because the variety of FIRST® Robotics Competitors groups has expanded in areas working below the district system, we perceive that the distribution of WFFA has not remained equitable to all areas. We’re making a change to enhance this for the 2023 season.
WFFA District Championship Allocations for 2023
The FIRST® in Michigan District Championship will award 3 WFFA recipients.
The next districts will award 2 WFFA recipients at their respective championships.
FIRST Chesapeake District

FIRST Mid-Atlantic District
New England District
Ontario District
Pacific Northwest District
The remaining District Championships will proceed to award 1 WFFA recipient.

The variety of WFFA recipients at every District Championship was decided by analyzing the variety of groups registered in every district and the variety of submitted essay nominations in every district within the earlier season. We perceive that that is an imperfect system, however we imagine it’s an enchancment, and we’ll proceed to reevaluate WFFA allocations within the coming years.
