The European Wildlife Photographer of the Yr is likely one of the most famed competitions for nature images. Yearly, the German Society for Nature Images (GDT) chooses the winners, and this 12 months, the general winner is Jaime Rojo from Spain. He impressed the jury together with his picture Within the Forest of the Monarchs. And sure, these are all butterflies you see on this implausible picture!

Jaime captured his spectacular successful picture in Mexico’s El Rosario butterfly sanctuary whereas on task for Nationwide Geographic Journal. Each autumn, hundreds of thousands of monarch butterflies journey hundreds of kilometers from North America to overwinter within the branches of oyamel firs. The dense clustering of butterflies and the safety of the tree cover present an important microclimate for his or her survival. Nonetheless, even small adjustments to the forest can disrupt this delicate stability. Maybe you’ve heard of this phenomenon. I bear in mind watching a documentary about it, and I used to be completely enchanted!

“The way forward for these butterflies, like that of so many different species, is threatened, stated Sabine Riewenherm, President of the German Federal Company for Nature Conservation and patron of the competitors.

“Monarch habitats are in peril: Intensive agriculture mixed with the usage of herbicides is destroying the milkweed vegetation important for his or her voracious caterpillars, unlawful logging is destroying their roosting websites, and rising storms in winter associated to local weather change are inflicting monarchs to perish en-route.
